weddings were not about love in primitive times. a man would visit another village and pick up a wife for many reasons other than being in love. there was no consent.
the idea of consent of marriage came in early Rome. it still was not about love, however, but more about commercial affairs. a father of the bride used to receive a dowry from the father of the groom, like a payment as if the groom was buying the bride...at my mom and dads wedding, my granddad joked with my grandfather, "where's my dowry?!"
early American weddings were a small private ceremony at the house of the bride or groom, and the wedding announcement was made at church the following Sunday.
the wedding industry really started to grow in the 20s and 30s. people were starting to have professionals organizing their weddings and having photographers attend their weddings.

wedding overtime have become significantly less arranged and significantly more about love. one sting stays the same however, the groom usually asks the bride's father before proposing!
